MEP Monica Macovei said she supports the protests mounted in Chisinau and the negotiation of a document by which the Government would pledge to satisfy particular demands of the protesters. “It’s not good for the whole Cabinet to resign, which is a thing wanted by Russia too. The solution is for this Government to commit itself and to be forced to do its duty,” says a message released by the team of Monica Macovei, quoted by IPN.

The MEP congratulated the Platform “Dignity and Truth” on the fact that it organized, stimulated and maintained this protest. The people are independent and take to the streets, if they want, to replace the chiefs that do not serve the people and the people’s interests. “In this case, they robbed the people. I mean the bank fraud. The people should protest as the politicians wait for the people not to take to the streets. They think the people will become bored and will no longer go out. Let’s show that we are strong and that we want to go out,” stated Monica Macovei.

She reminded that the National Bank governor resigned and she sought his resignation too, in a previous statement. “The prosecutor general and the head of the Anticorruption Center should also resign as they conducted no real investigation into the theft and, in general, into cases of corruption, appropriation of public money and money laundering in Moldova. I asked and continue to ask that the Head of Parliament should tender his resignation because he ordered no parliamentary inquiry into what had happened,” wrote the MEP.

As to the resignation of the Government, Monica Macovei said she is personally against this. She is for negotiations between representatives of the people and the Government, which would end with a signed document whereby the Cabinet would promise particular things demanded by the protesters. The bank fraud should be investigated up to the end so that those to blame are held accountable.

The nonstop protests in the Great National Assembly Square of Chisinau started a month ago.
