The “European Action” Movement (EAM) hopes it will be able to participate in the local elections on June 3, after the Supreme Justice Court rejected the appeal of the Ministry of Justice (MJ) on April 4, leaving in force the decision of the Chisinau Court of Appeals of February 13, which ordered the MJ to register the party. Although it is prohibited to register a party for the election campaign after the Parliament announced the date of the local elections on March 23, EAM members consider that the authorities, including the Central Election Committee will take into consideration the fact that the rights of the Party were violated and it will be allowed to participate in elections. Otherwise, EAM reserves itself the right to sue the unfavourable decisions. Chair of the Movement Anatol Petrencu told a news conference on April 5 that the civil society should acknowledge the fact that the delay to register the party was organised by the present government on purpose, with the obvious intention to obstruct the party’s participation in local elections and if the MJ would have been truly independent and would have served the law, it would have registered EAM within the period established by the law, that is on December 20, 2006. In his words, the representatives of the General Prosecutor’s Office, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Centre for Combating Economic Crime and Corruption must be informed about the decision of the Supreme Justice Court, as they all insistently execute the investigation and intimidation orders in the case of the EAM, causing moral and emotional damages to its members. Petrencu previously announced that if EAM will not be registered, the party will support a single opposition candidate for the office of Chisinau Mayor, if it will be a personality or will have the trust vote of the rest of parties. Also, the members of the party will run as independent candidates or under the symbol of any democratic party that would be ready to accept EAM members in the election campaign. Among the personalities which deserve to run for mayor, Petrencu mentioned Eugen Doga, Veaceslav Ionita, Nicolae Dabija, Valeriu Lazar, Nicolae Tau. At present, the “European Action” Movement has about 10 thousand members.
