Veaceslav Zaporojan was appointed as judge of the Constitutional Court. The Government approved a draft decision to this effect in its July 6 meeting, IPN reports.

Deputy Minister of Justice Nicolae Esanu said Veaceslav Zaporojan was chosen at a contest staged by a reliable commission and civil society is convinced that the choice is a very good one.

“Mister Zaporojan is an experienced jurist. He worked for 13 years as an assistant judge at the Constitutional Court and has rich teaching and practical experience and we think that he meets all the requirements,” stated the minister.

Prime Minister Pavel Filip said that even if this contest was held in the period of another government, he supports the appointment of Veaceslav Zaporojan given that civil society also approves of this candidate, while the contest was a transparent one.

The Constitutional Court judges are named by Parliament, the Government and the Superior Council of Magistracy, by two each. The contest to choose a new judge was staged last autumn, after the expiration of the term in office of judge Petru Railean, who was named by the Government in 2008.
