Government intends to create a test-project that will develop a super-market chain to cover all of Moldova, including the rural area.
According to the Internal Commerce Development Concept for the Republic of Moldova for the 2006-2009 years, recently approved by the Government, the first step is the construction of big commercial centers in key geographical areas of the Republic of Moldova, depending on the population number. In the second stage the network will grow to cover raional centers, as well as villages with more than 8-10 thousand inhabitants. All supermarkets will be built and will operate with modern technologies and performing commercial equipment.
The network will sell alimentary and products of first necessity. Thanks to an integrated network system and several logistic centers, and also because of the amounts of merchandise purchased, the network will offer the lowest prices on the market. Therefore, according to a Governmental prognosis, unorganized commerce, and first of all open air markets, will be unable to compete with a modern network with low prices and quality services and will disappear.
Every supermarket will have additional territories for agricultural products collection centers. There will also be areas for other services: drug stores, commercial banks representatives, dry cleaners etc.
Another important feature of the project is that the local products will be sold in the same place it was produced. The Government also believes that such a project will have a deep social and economic impact, including the creation of new labor places through the whole the Republic of Moldova, modernization of both wholesale and retail commerce systems, luring in rural areas local producers and service offering companies; enlarging the range of goods offered to the customer; increasing service quality in rural areas etc.
To implement this program, the Government will create a task group from representatives of central governmental organizations and local public administration, in order to choose the locations of the mentioned commercial centers. Eventually a business-plan will be elaborated and presented to local and foreign investors.
