The Government approved the bill to sell the site of the former Republican Stadium in Chisinau to the United States for construction of a New Embassy Compound. The draft law to ratify the agreement with the U.S. was endorsed on April 20 and is to be transmitted to Parliament for examination and adoption, IPN reports.
Ruslan Bolbocean, secretary of state at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, said the agreement compiled by exchange of notes between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Government of the United States was signed in Chisinau on July 12, 2019. A memorandum of understanding on the purchase of the lot will be signed. The purchase will be coordinated by an inter-ministerial working group set up by order of the Premier. The U.S. Government will cover the costs for legalizing the ownership documents.
The lot that is 5.1814 ha is situated at 12 Tighina St. The Public Property Agency was instructed to ensure the assessment of the value of the state-owned lot.
Public Property Agency director Eugeniu Cozonac said that the historical gates and the entrance of the former Republican Stadium will be renovated so as to emphasize the historical significance of the Stadium. The U.S. undertook to earmark a part of the lot for a park that will be accessible to the public.
The bill to sell the site of the former Republican Stadium to the United States for construction of a New Embassy Compound was adopted by the regime controlled by Vlad Plahoniuc in 2018. In 2020, Parliament, on the Socialists’ initiative, repealed the law and the lot returned under public ownership. Later, through the agency of the Constitutional Court, the abrogation of the law was annulled.
