Government earmarks extra 100 mln lei to rehabilitate Chisinau-Leuseni highway

The Government allocated this week an additional 100 million lei from the State Budget to rehabilitate the 100 km-long Chisinau-Leuseni highway, which is due to start operating on September 25. Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev said the total cost of the project exceeded 300 million lei. All the expenses were covered by the State Budget. The money from foreign donors, totalling about 100 million US dollars, is to be used to rehabilitate other national public roads, Tarlev said. Concerned about the high cost of the road rehabilitation projects, the prime minister requested the persons in charge not put “a single square metre” into use without prior sanction from the Standardisation & Metrology Service. “At first sight, it looks fine and new, but its quality has to be tested by a professional laboratory only”, said Tarlev, requesting the contractors to offer guarantees of at least ten years for the refurbished roads.
