Government creates Council for Coordination of Crime and Corruption Fighting

The Government Wednesday instituted the Council for Coordination of Activities Aimed at Preventing and Combating Criminality and Corruption. It will work under the executive, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Council is composed of the Deputy Prime Minister Valentin Mejinschi, Prosecutor General Valeriu Gurbulea, the head of the Security and Information Service Artur Resetnicov, Minister of Justice Vitalie Parlog, Minister of Internal Affairs Gheorghe Papuc, the director general of the Customs Service Viorel Melnic, the director general of the Border Guard Service Igor Colenov and the president of the Audit Office Ala Popescu. Under the activity regulations approved by the Government, the Council will coordinate law enforcement agencies’ activities aimed at fighting crime and corruption so as to make them more efficient. The Council will focus on insurance of legality, in particular in such areas as observance of the human rights and freedoms, maintenance of public order, human trafficking and prevention of illegal migration, guaranteeing of national security. The Council will also cooperate with the nongovernmental organizations that work in such areas as protection of the human rights and freedoms, combating of corruption, trafficking in human beings and illegal migration, and with other related organizations. According to the Government, the lack of communication and consistent coordination in the prevention and fighting of crime and corruption diminishes people’s trust and damages Moldova’s image. The creation of the Council offers possibilities of coordinating and carrying out activities aimed at preventing and combating crime and corruption, insuring simultaneously the continuous implementation of the plans, strategies and agreements in the field. Government officials said that the practice of coordinating law enforcement agencies’ activities aimed at fighting crime and corruption is broadly used in Europe and all over the world.
