The holding of the consultative referendum on the method of electing the head of state offers the Alliance for European Integration an excellent propaganda platform that will be used against the Communists Party (PCRM), said the political analyst Igor Botan, the executive director of the Association for Participative Democracy (ADEPT), commenting on the Alliance's decision that was made known on June 3, Info-Prim Neo reports. Igor Botan said today's decision is the Alliance's unity platform and if the PCRM puts up resistance, it will go against the will of the people, who, according to the opinion polls, want the head of state to be elected directly by them. The executive director of ADEPT says the decision taken by the Alliance complies with the Constitutional Court's decision of May 5, which says all the articles of the Constitution except three - about the sovereignty and neutrality of Moldova – can be modified by referendum. “Moreover, the solution was mediated by the Council of Europe and its Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland,” the analyst said. “I don't know how the PCRM will act in such a situation, but it is clear that its boycott and protests are now useless.” However, the analyst expressed his concern that a precedent could be set for easily and quickly modifying the Constitution, without the necessary filters in Parliament. Igor Botan said the referendum and the elections are expensive, but this is another argument against the Communists as about 70 million lei will be spent because the PCRM boycotted the election of the head of state and prevented Moldova from developing normally.
