The Government on Monday has decided to allocate 200 million lei from its rainy-day fund for farmers. According to Vladimir Bolea, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, the aid aims to support about 3,000 micro and small farmers so that they can continue their work to provide the population of Moldova with food.

The handouts are expected to help farmers process 280,000 hectares of land cultivated with first group crops.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean declared that the allocation is an effort that the entire Moldovan society, all social groups are making to help those who suffered losses last year and this year.

Dorin Recean stated that agriculture benefits from massive support, over 1.7 billion lei annually, and the Government wants agriculture to gradually become more technological and less vulnerable to various external threats. “The enormous effort that we are making today and that we have made before must help some of the farmers overcome the financial difficulties that they have today and we hope that the farmers appreciate that the whole society is helping them in this regard”, declared Dorin Recean.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, through the Agency for Agricultural Intervention and Payments, will distribute the funds in accordance with a special regulation.
