For the first time, a contingent consisting of 20 National Army service members this year will take part in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The Cabinet on February 16 approved a decision concerning the organizational measures and conditions needed for conducting the mission, IPN reports.

The Ministry of Defense will ensure the selection of the contingent from among professional service members of the National Army on a voluntary basis and will train and outfit these with military equipment and things needed for fulfilling their duties.

It will agree the rotation period and order, the return conditions, depending on the international practice and the opportunities offered by the partners. The Ministry will negotiate and sign memorandums and technical agreements for ensuring the logistic support in the participation of the National Army’s contingent in UNIFIL.

The institution will be able to adjust the number of participating service members depending on the operational needs, within the limits approved by Parliament.

UNIFIL was created to restore international peace and security in southern Lebanon. The mission involves about 10,500 troops from 45 countries.
