Goods to the value of nearly 4 million lei were confiscated last year. These were mainly alcoholic beverages and food products, such as meat, fish, and sugar. The fate of these products, depending on their origin, is decided by the court of law or a joint commission that orders destroying the products or, in some cases, taking them to the zoological garden for feeding animals.

In an answer to an inquiry by IPN, the National Investigations Inspectorate said that based on the accumulated evidence, the courts of law last year ordered confiscating goods to the value of 3.7 million lei, including food products of over 3.0 million lei.

If the use-by date of the confiscated products is not expired, the decision is taken by the National Consumer Protection Agency. Based on its own regulations, the Agency can issue prescriptions to suspend the sale of consignments of goods or remove them from sale.

Contacted by IPN, the head of the press service of the National Consumer Protection Agency Lilia Cojocaru said the Agency, in concert with other specialized bodies, sets up a joint commission that decides whether the products should be destroyed or can be transmitted to the zoological garden for feeding the animals.
