A woman has been arrested on the Chisinau airport on suspicion of trying to take 200 grams of gold out of the country, Info-Prim Neo has learnt from the Interior Ministry.
The 49-year-old woman from Causeni district was taken into custody, after she passed the customs control and was heading for the plane to Larnaca. She had over 30 golden objects worth some 90,000 lei in her purse, which she did not declare. The police has established the suspect has been working in Cyprus for 10 years, and returns from time to time to her household in Causeni.
According to the police, the the jewels were bought in Moldova and were to be sold off in Cyprus at a higher price. She insists she bought the gold for herself.
A penal inquest has been started and she may get from 3 to 10 years of prison for smuggling.
The law allows to take out of the country only 5 units of jewelry.
