The leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu said the July 2 meeting with President Nicolae Timofti focused on the necessity of forming a ruling alliance and of fielding a candidate for premiership, IPN reports.

After the meeting, Mihai Ghimpu told the journalists that they didn’t discuss concrete names, but a candidate will be proposed when a parliamentary majority is formed. Asked if he had discussions with his former alliance colleagues – the leader of the PLDM Vlad Filat and the leader of the PDM Marian Lupu – Ghimpu said he met the two yesterday, July 1.

“We discussed what we should do to overcome the current difficult situation. We, the Liberals, do not have an alternative. If we do not join in the government, it will be worse. The situation is bad, but there is no alternative. We must try and remedy the situation and save the European course,” stated Mihai Ghimpu.

The Liberal leader said they haven’t yet discussed something definite and the decision to form an alliance will be made public when a relevant agreement is signed. It was agreed to create groups of experts who will examine different aspects, including the structure of the future Cabinet.

Mihai Ghimpu said the negotiations cannot last for months and things will become clear in the near future. The Liberals will not give up their demands, but there is place for discussion and these can be reformulated. The Democrats and the Liberal-Democrats agreed to allow the press to attend the negotiations.

President Nicolae Timofti is holding discussions with the leaders of the parliamentary groups with a view to agreeing an agenda of consultations for designating a candidate for Prime Minister. He already had separate meetings with the leader of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Vlad Filat and with the leader of the Democratic group Marian Lupu.
