Aleksandr Kalinin, who heads the Congress of the Moldovan Diasporas, accused the leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu of dividing the Moldovan diaspora into ‘ours’ and ‘yours’. The reaction comes after Mihai Ghimpu recently accused the Congress of being an organization controlled by the Russian intelligence services and managed by the Russians, IPN reports.

In a communiqué, the Congress describes the politicians’ statements as attempt to gain advantages in the election campaign as his party’s rating decreased considerably. “On the one hand, Ghimpu welcomes the activity of the Moldovan diaspora in the EU member states. On the other hand, he attacks the migrants working in Russia. The fact that the Moldovan migrants working in Russia do not form part of the voters of the Liberal Party does not allow him to divide the Moldovan diaspora, which is a single body,” said Aleksandr Kalinin. He accused the Liberal leader of being a secret agent of the Romanian intelligence services and that his party is financed by the Policy Department for Relations with Romanians Abroad

Aleksandr Kalinin denied Liberals’ assertions that the Congress is financed by the Moldovan Government and asked presenting conclusive evidence. As to the accusation that the Congress uses the head office of the Moldovan Embassy in Russia to gain Moldovans’ confidence, he said the organization he heads gained Moldovans’ confidence by daily work, not by the positioning of its offices.

In a news conference, Mihai Ghimpu accused the leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon of cooperating with the Russian intelligence services, which control the organizations of the Moldovan diaspora, including the Congress of the Moldovan Diasporas, and manipulate the Moldovan migrants from Russia in order to hamper the European integration process.
