“Denouncing the phenomenon of Communism is a moral, intellectual, political and social duty today more than ever. Learning about these dark and sad pages of our country's history is a must for new generations, who have the right to know in what world their parents lived”, declared Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu at debates on the Liberals' proposal to condemn the Communist totalitarian regime, Info-Prim Neo reports. Mihai Ghimpu said that over the years the Communist Party of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldavia pursued a policy against the people. “In the name of utopic goals, the Communist Party usurped the power and replaced the state bodies, organized mass repressions and deportations, forced collectivization, planned famine, systematically and methodically killed off national culture, customs and traditions, the native language and history”, affirmed Ghimpu. The PL leader declared that for five decades power had been seized by a regime alien to the interests and aspirations of the people. “When we talk about hundreds of thousands of victims, there are no doubts that the regime mutilated human souls, destroyed destinies and left its mark on several generations through ideological actions. A whole population was forced to live in a state of duality. There can be no justification for a regime whose only reason was to stay in power, using a hatred-based ideology and a culture of violence”, said Mihai Ghimpu. According to him, denouncing this past is a priority of the present. “Any regime that humiliates its citizens can’t last and mustn’t exist”, said Mihai Ghimpu. The Liberal group proposed the condemnation of the totalitarian Communist regime in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldova, which committed crimes against humanity, and of the actions of all those who contributed to these crimes. The bill forbids the use for political purposes of the Communist totalitarian regime’s symbols, that is the hammer and the sickle, and of any other support depicting these symbols.
