Gheorghe Duca decided to resign as president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. He made the announcement in an extraordinary meeting convoked on November 28, IPN reports.
In his statement, Gheorghe Duca invoked health reasons. “This decision coincides with the criminal proceedings concerning the salaries of our family hat were recently resumed. But not the direct repercussions of the trial determined my withdrawal from the post. There are several other reasons that made me take such a step now. The suspicions and uncertainty around this case make by blood pressure and glycaemia rise and I don’t want to experience again health problems as this May. Regrettably, in the conditions of the new reforms, my experience of manager is no longer in demand. The expectations and prerogatives are now different,” he said.
Gheorghe Duca voiced hope that if he is no longer a public figure, the court will do justice and will have an objective and impartial attitude so that the public denigration and attacks against him and his family are brought to an end.
“I never answered these as it would have meant becoming involved in a struggle with windmills. It will remain on the conscience of those who made those false statements. But I want today to note that I do not consider myself guilty. I applied no schemes and embezzled no funds. On the contrary, I strengthened the Academy’s property and didn’t allow any plot to be privatized,” said Gheorghe Duca, noting they officially declared the property owned by him and his family.
Gheorghe Duca had served as president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova since 2004.
