Gheorghe Costandachi, head of the European Social-Political Center, announces that he will run independently for Chisinau mayor. In a press conference at IPN, Gheorghe Costandachi said he would be an apolitical candidate.

Gheorghe Costandachi mentioned that he "carefully analyzed the general situation of Chisinau municipality, all the expectations and challenges faced by people and decided to come up with this initiative". According to the candidate, "the head of the City Hall must be an apolitical person, who has no political and clan commitments, nor obligations towards mafia groups, a person who can bring changes". He also said that "the mayor should not be a too flexible person who changes his opinion according to governance’s political color, but a man who remains faithful to moral values, principles of professionalism and freedom of action". He also said that "the City Hall should be led by a person of integrity and a good manager backed by a team of professional, honest and uncompromised persons".

Gheorghe Costandachi addresses all extra-parliamentary political parties, civil society, experts, businessmen, residents of Chisinau municipality, with the request for trust and support. "It will be difficult for me, even impossible to compete alone with giants who have all the administrative, financial and media resources available," the candidate said.

Alexandru Gamanjii, doctor of economics, university lecturer, said that "the disorder, chaos and corruption in Chisinau municipality occurs because every mayor elected so far served the interests of his political party". Gamanjii referred to Gheorghe Costandachi as a person who strives to act in the interest of the people and as a "high profile economist" needed by the capital.

Igor Borfontina, PRO Civic Movement representative, mentioned that capital’s inhabitants expect a clean city, good roads and sufficient public transport to be ensured. He also mentioned that apolitical candidates rather than political ones can bring on changes as they come from the people, act in the interest of the people and are more responsible to keep their promises.

Fiodor Ghelici, chair of My Moldova Public Association, says that the city of Chisinau should belong to the inhabitants, not to the parties and that behind the people who gathered around Gheorghe Costandachi there is only one party - the "people's party". Fiodor Ghelici urged the citizens, irrespective of their ethnicity and mother tongue, not to support further the candidates of political parties, who have discredited themselves.

The general local elections will be held on October 20.
