Historian and publicist Gheorghe Cojocaru said that some see the possibility of cleaning the political class and accelerating the European integration course in the demand to call early legislative elections, while others, on the contrary, dream of political revenge and of a halt to this course. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, quoted by IPN, the historian said that the loss of the European course cannot represent pay for the early legislative elections.

“The demand to announce early elections is the expression of a social protest that is based on the fact that a considerable part of society lost confidence in the current government. The theft of the century and the authorities’ lack of reaction to this illegality made the people take to the street. The fury over the financial fraud committed through the three banks closed by the Strelet Government does not divide the people according to their political beliefs. The fact that the people are solidary about the identification and punishment of those involved in the financial fraud does not mean that they would like the same to happen to Moldova after the early elections,” said the historian.

Gheorghe Cojocaru considers that it will be impossible to ease the tensions until a clear answer as to who committed the theft of the century and how it was possible is given. Nobody can guarantee that those who will come to power possibly as a result of early parliamentary elections will shed light in this case.

According to him, the theft of the century is a very good theme for political struggles, but it can volatilize immediately after the reflectors of the election campaign are turned off. The early parliamentary elections today could maintain the same ratio of forces and are more convenient for the power than for the protesters if judging by the results of this year’s locale elections.
