Chairman of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Elmar Brok called upon the pro-European forces of Moldova to unite, noting that the results achieved by the candidates in the first round of the presidential elections on October 30 would have looked differently if the decision to nominate Maia Sandu as a common candidates of the pro-Europeans had been taken earlier. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, the German MEP assured that the European Union will respect any result of the elections held in the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

“It’s a pity that the split of the pro-European parties during the last few years leaves imprints on the country’s future. This split served the pro-Russian candidate, who managed to convince over 48% of the voters. The day has come for all the pro-European forces, despite all the animosities of the past, to combine forces and make a common effort to help Missis Maia Sandu to become the first openly declared pro-European President elected by the people,” stated Elmar Brok.

The MEP noted it is regrettable that the pro-European forces have struggled between them for almost ten years for personal rather than political reasons. “That’s why they agreed to field Missis Maia Sandu as a common candidate of the pro-European forces so late, I would say too late. They had not much time for the common campaign. So, the mistakes of the past have an influence on the present. I hope in the runoff, the effort of the pro-European forces will be concentrated, sustained and coherent so that Moldova has a President who will keep it on the European road,” he stated.

Elmar Brok voiced hope that Maia Sandu, whom she knows personally, will be elected President by the Moldovan citizens. “I’m confident that Missis Sandu is able to keep the country united. I know it won’t be easy and we will ultimately respect any choice of the Moldovan people. Surely, we would be glad if the people choose Maia Sandu,” he said.
