German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit in Chisinau is an obviously absolute success for Moldova’s diplomacy and for the state policy, and it confirms the European status of the country. The opinion was voiced by political analyst Viorel Cibotaru, who told Info-Prim Neo that the visit was a truly historical one. “Coming to Chisinau during a global European crisis, when Mrs. Merkel’s attention is caught by the European Union’s existential problems, is historical by definition and by the way she presented the situation”, said Viorel Cibotaru. An important aspect, according to him, was tackling the issue of the Transnistrian conflict. “A crucial moment in Mrs. Merkel’s declaration sounds like an alarm signal. And it’s the big surprise. She said there were no arguments to delay the settlement of the conflict today. It’s not only about the stance of the government or of the Transnistrian side, but it’s about the position of very important countries”, explained the analyst. According to Cibotaru, it’s noteworthy Prime Minister Vlad Filat’s statement of identity that Moldova wasn’t in the east of Europe, but in the heart of Europe. “It’s a diplomatic battle to sort out Moldova’s identity. This is a new start for the discussions regarding the geopolitical, geo-historical and geo-economical position of Moldova”, he concluded. On August 22, the German Chancellor visited Chisinau and met with the Moldovan President, with Prime Minister Vlad Filat and with the leaders of parliamentary parties. She also delivered a speech at the Palace of the Republic.
