Moldova has yet a lot to do to correct the mistakes made in the past and to implement reforms on the path to European integration, Germany’s Ambassador in Chisinau Matthias Meyer said in the program “Politics” on TV7 channel, IPN reports.
According to the diplomat, Moldova is in the situation when it must actively treat the wounds and everyone should take part in this treatment.
Matthias Meyer noted that a lot should be done in justice and, when reforming this sector, one should not forget that Moldova is a small country where the people know each other. As to the European funds allocated for reforming the justice sector of Moldova, the ambassador said that they don’t need proofs that expensive devices were purchased, but want to see that real reforms are being done.
The diplomat stated that a single case of conviction of a judge of corruption acts cannot convince the people that corruption was eradicated from the system, and more pressure should be exerted from above to root out this phenomenon. A solution is to invite judges from Europe to attend the hearings and the judges from Romania, who know the language, should be the first to be invited. Judges from Germany can also come to trials, if translation is ensured.
As regards the internal situation in Moldova, Matthias Meyer said that Moldova must avoid internal conflicts. In society there is a lot of envy and misunderstandings. A person should exist to take the country out of this situation. Asked whom he considers suitable, the diplomat avoided giving names, saying he has great confidence in Prime Minister Iurie Leanca and called on the Moldovan people to support the current Government.
The German ambassador said that the situation in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia is caused by foreign factors, but didn’t specify them. “When we meet with officials from Comrat face to face, they all say they are pro-Europeans. But then declare something else. It’s clear that foreign pressure is exerted on them,” stated Matthias Meyer.
