The geopolitical stake should not be overlooked in the upcoming elections that will take place on February 24, 2019. Amid the events in the region, the geopolitical element is even more important than many of the internal themes disused in the electoral period, IPN reports.
Editorialist Nicolae Negru said there are also domestic stakes, such as democratization and deoligarchization. Nevertheless, the external stake should also be considered. “Some say the stake is not geopolitical and that Russia poses no danger and this in the context of the war in Ukraine. (...) From my viewpoint, this is ineptness ,” Nicolae Negru stated in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel.
Political commentator Cornel Ciurea said geopolitics cannot be excluded from the equation. Moreover, it is the main stake in the elections for many observers, politicians. “The course towards which the balance will incline – towards Russia or towards the West - is a major element as everyone is caught in this geopolitical vise and tries to solve very important regional problems, including Ukraine,” stated the analyst. According to him, such internal themes as democracy and the quality of justice are secondary to geopolitics, but these cannot be ignored.
Political analyst Victor Ciobanu said the inventive lawmakers already envisioned the method of invalidating the election outcome in up to one third of constituencies, by fully keeping the results of the elections. “If the results in these constituencies are not suitable for the government, we will again witness this parade of “independent” justice in the Republic of Moldova,” stated the commentator. According to him, the elections in Chisinau were that red line that was successfully crossed by the current government.
The parliamentary elections will take place on February 24, while the election campaign starts on January 25.
