Geneva doctors operated four children with heart defects

Four children aged between 10 months and 13 years, who suffered from congenital heart defects, were operated at the National Cynical Hospital by a group of doctors from Switzerland. They were assisted by the head of the Heart Surgery Center of the Geneva University HospitalAfksendiyos Kalangos, IPN reports.

Minister of Health Andrei Usatyi told a news conference that the performed surgeries were very complicated. The children’s parents paid nothing. The costs were covered from the state budget. A heart operation in case of malformations costs €30,000 on average. Surgeon Afksendiyos Kalangos said the operation on a ten-month-old girl was the fifth by the difficulty degree of the several thousands that he performed.

National Cynical Hospital director Sergiu Popa said that about 700 children are born will congenital defects annually. Approximately 300 of them need surgery. The children are operated by Moldovan specialists, but when the cases are very serious there are invited doctors from abroad. The files of the children operated on July 21-23 were sent to Geneva for examination six months ago.

Andrei Usatui said that while in Chisinau, the Swiss specialists will train doctors of the National Clinical Hospital. A cooperation agreement between the Chisinau Hospital and the Heart Surgery Center of the Geneva University Hospital will be soon signed. Based on this agreement, a team of surgeons, anesthesiologists and medical assistants will go to Geneva to receive training. When back, they will work in the new surgical block that will be opened this year and will train other doctors.

The operated children are out of danger and the specialists assured that the patients will live an untroubled life without drugs.
