The Rezina district hospital has a new General Surgery Unit. The European Union and the United Nations Development Program in partnership with the local public administration provided over €115,000 for its renovation, IPN reports.

According to a press release from the UNDP, annually, about 2,000 people from Rezina rayon, and Ribnita and Camenca localities from the left side of the Nistru River, are treated in the General Surgery Unit.

The EU-UNDP “Support to Confidence Building Measures” Program helped change all doors and windows, electricity and heating distribution networks, and water and sewerage supply systems.  Also, the Unit’s four departments were equipped with furniture.

“With donors’ help, we can provide today better treatment conditions for people from both sides of the Nistru River, and thus build good relations between them. This investment was very timely, offering the possibility to also access other funds to improve healthcare services in our rayon”, said Maria Florea, director of the hospital.

“I am proud to inaugurate today the General Surgery Department, which shows that the assistance provided by the EU is of direct benefit to the citizens and may, in the present case, virtually save lives, while fostering cross-river cooperation”, said Dirk Schuebel, Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova.

Nicola Harrington-Buhay, UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova, said that today’s event is another major step in creating better living conditions. “In the near future, we will join our efforts to renovate the hospital in Ribnita”.

The “Support to Confidence Building Measures” Program supports local public authorities, representatives of civil society organizations, businessmen and other stakeholders from both sides of the Nistru River to carry out joint activities in five key areas: business development, civil society development, social infrastructure renovation, healthcare and environment protection.
