The work of prosecutors is fundamental to the rule of law, and society's trust in the prosecutor's office depends on professionalism, integrity and firmness in law enforcement. In a difficult and uncertain social and legal context, with continuous changes that leave a significant imprint on the efficiency of the prosecution system, it is essential to adapt and improve in order to be able to respond promptly to the current challenges, prosecutor general Ion Munteanu stated at the General Assembly of Prosecutors convened on Tuesday, IPN reports.

Ion Munteanu noted that the duty of prosecutors is to defend the rights and freedoms of citizens, to fight corruption and crime and to ensure fair justice. According to him, a major challenge last year was posed by the new electoral corruption trends. And this is an experience that forces them to be more vigilant in combating this scourge and to step up efforts to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.

"Each of us has an essential role in building a strong prosecutor's office, which is perceived as fair and impartial. Any action of prosecutors influences not only the cases under management, but also the public's perception of justice," said the prosecutor general.

According to Ion Munteanu, one of the objectives for this year is to increase institutional transparency so that the citizens trust the prosecutor's office. For the purpose, they must be open in communicating the results and explaining the decisions they make.

Among the objectives are also the implementation of the reorganization of the local prosecutors' offices, which is an essential process for the efficiency of work, restoration of the rights of the victims of crime, including through the recovery of the damages caused – a fundamental aspect of fair justice, the confiscation of proceeds of crime, the fight against electoral corruption, in order to protect the right to free elections, as the basis of democracy and consolidation of the rule of law.

Present at the event, Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru said that the key elements in carrying out the mission of the prosecutor's office are related to the keeping of the country objective to join the European Union. According to the official, progress, challenges, experiences and reforms will follow throughout this journey, but all these will not have any value and continuity if there are no prompt and vigilant responses to the risk that threaten the security of the state and democracy, but especially to the actions to destabilize the European course.

The General Assembly of Prosecutors involves over 530 state prosecutors out of the almost 600 who work in the system. The meeting is to choose new prosecutor members in the two subordinate boards – the Board for the Selection and Evaluation of Prosecutors and the Board of Discipline and Ethics of Prosecutors.
