Galina Dodon is rejecting all the charges brought by prosecutors against her, condemning the case as “politically motivated” and aiming to “defame” her husband, the former president Igor Dodon. She stated this after leaving the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, where she has been formally charged with complicity in unjust enrichment.
“They are treating us like scum. They searched our parents and intimidated them. They searched even the latrine in the garden. What were they doing there? We are dealing with people who are specially trained to slander us. I’m afraid that the next one to be targeted will be our son, who is returning home on vacation. I think he might soon be banned from studying in Russia”, the former first lady told reporters.
Galina Dodon says her brother is being held behind bars “for no reason”. “He made some money in Russia and came to Moldova, to Molovata, his home village, to open a business. He gave people jobs, he paid his taxes, but now they treat him like dirt and keep him in prison. They are causing great suffering to out parents. Our mothers are sick, they don’t let them come to see their grandchildren, their son. Stop, I am begging you, everything has a limit”, said Mrs. Dodon.
Mrs. Dodon is believed to have helped her husband accumulate wealth estimated at over 21 million lei, which exceeds by far the 3 million lei amount officially declared by the couple from February 2014 to October 2021. As a preventive measure, she may not travel abroad in the next 60 days.
Igor Dodon is currently under house arrest after being charged with unjust enrichment and illegal party financing, among other accusations. Galina Dodon’s brother is in remand, being prosecuted in the same case.
