Galina Bostan, executive director of the Center for the Analysis and Prevention of Corruption, said Article 25 of the Constitution provides that the prosecutor general can be dismissed by a presidential decree at the suggestion of the Superior Council of Prosecutors. In a talk show on TV8 channel, she said the prosecutor general should be removed according to law, IPN reports.

“All the roads go to the SCP that includes the minister of justice through whose agency action can be taken and also three representatives of civil society. In such conditions, arguments should be employed to obtain a decision of the SCP,” stated Galina Bostan.

Parliament Deputy Speaker Ion Ceban noted that if things are dallied, more proofs in institutions could be destroyed. “What is important is for this institution of the prosecution service to act really independently, transparently and to deal with what it should, not with political orders, as in the recent past, not by doing justice by phone and by punishing those who are inconvenient,” stated the politician.

Parliament Deputy Speaker Mihai Popșoi said he would like Eduard Harunjen to quit himself. The prosecution service should have been cleared long ago. “We had enough patience and took this step consciously. We aim to free the prosecution service not in order to appoint a man of ours there or to punish our political opponents and hold political detainees, as our predecessors did. We do not intend to name a prosecutor who will extort money from businessman. This is not our plan. Our plan is to free the prosecution service for a really independent prosecutor,” he noted.

On July 9, Parliament passed a motion finding that Eduard Harunjen had not been eligible to become Prosecutor General and recommending the President to “terminate his employment”.
