The Governor of Gagauzia initiated a local referendum on Moldova’s European vector under the influence of external factors, considers the director of the Center for Strategic Research and Political Consultancy “Politicon” Anatol Taranu. Contacted by IPN, he said that before the Eastern Partnership Summit of Vilnius, Russia is making effort to exert all its influence so as to hamper Moldova from following its European course.
“The result of this referendum in Gagauzia is predictable. It will definitely be in favor of the Eurasian Union. This thing confirms once again that the autonomous region does not integrate into the Moldovan community and continues to be a separate unit,” said Anatol Taranu.
According to him, a local referendum is consultative only. “It’s a pity that the Governor of Gagauzia missed the chance to become an authentic Moldovan politician and accepted actions that run counter to Moldova’s national interest,” stated the analyst.
The Governor of Gagauzia Mihail Formuzal proposed holding a local referendum on the foreign development course of Moldova. A decision to this effect was taken on October 1.
