The Republic of Moldova will host one of the most important international competitions in the world of tennis – “Billie Jean King Cup”. The tournament will take place during June 17-22 at the tennis courts of the Chisinau Arena, with free entrance, IPN reports.
In a news conference hosted by IPN, president of the National Tennis Federation of Moldova Ceslav Ciuhrii said that it is a prestigious competition that can be compared with a world tennis championship. A significant effort was made to gather the team in Moldova as most of the players settled abroad. The president of the Federation expressed his confidence that the Moldovan athletes will show a good performance.
The team’s captain Olga Kosyk said that each athlete has an individual program, stressing that it is a great luck that they were gathered together to participate in the competition. “I think that in every game it will not be at all easy and we will have to make a maximum effort. Besides us, there will be ten teams, from Albania, Armenia... I think that among the favorites will be the teams from Cyprus, Finland, Luxembourg and Montenegro. We are waiting for strong players who have confirmed their participation,” stated Olga Kosyk.
There will be two subgroups at the tournament. The draw will take place the day before the competition. Depending on the subgroup, the team will have four or five matches. Each athlete from the five in the team will be able to test their strength. The matches will start at 11:00 a.m., said Olga Kosyk.
Tennis player Daniela Ciobanu said the fact that the tournament is held on a concrete surface is an advantage for the national team and for her personally. The Moldovan athletes are ready to compete in any conditions. It is a team competition and the individual results do not guarantee the expected result. “We have a very good team. We will divide the energy so that we have enough of it throughout the week,” stated the athlete.
Tennis player Abigail Rencheli, who comes from the U.S., said that she is very happy to represent the Republic of Moldova at this competition and will fight for every point brought to the team.
Tennis player Lia Belibova is 15 years old. Although she is a junior, she managed to make the list of participants. The athlete voiced hope that she will have a good performance alongside the team.
Arina Gamretskaya noted that for the third time she will play for the senior national team. She has always liked to be part of the national team and, when the match takes place at home, it is a special experience as family and friends will be present.
