Dignitaries, artists and ordinary people came on Thursday morning to the Saint Theodora of Sihla Church to pay their last respects to plastic artist Glebus Sainciuc. Speaker Marian Lupu described the artist as a titan of national culture. “Over the last year, the titans have been passing away: Maria Biesu, Aureliu Busuioc and now Glebus Sainciuc. These are losses that can never be replaced”. Marian Lupu said he would propose the opening of a museum to homage Glebus Sainciuc. “He made masks with great skill and talent, which is rare in Moldovan arts, and his exquisite art deserves a place to be preserved”, said the Speaker. Adviser to Prime Minister Vlad Filat and former Minister of Education Leonid Bujor stated the death of Glebus Sainciuc was a great loss. “The Maestro knew how to represent the man and all its multitude of traits through masks. He will be remembered by people of good faith not only as a man of culture, but as a man who described everything that is beautiful through the simplest of sketches”, said Bujor. Writers Union president Arcadie Suceveanu said Glebus Sainciuc was the model a true artist, who bore his cross without boasting about his deeds. “He exemplified a kind of relationship with time. Quick-footed, he managed to go to every beautiful event and run from every bad one. His art communicates and builds bridges between people”. Poet and MP Ion Hadarca said that with the death of Glebus Sainciu a whole era passed away. “All people of international value visited his workshop when they visited Chisinau. His heritage is unique. It is a world of masks, a parallel world that notwithstanding the irony depicts the real world”, said Ion Hadarca. Liberal Party leader Mihai Ghimpu said he visited Glebus Sainciuc while he was still alive and was shocked by the poverty in which he lived, which is proof of the government’s disregard for gifted people. Glebus Sainciuc died on Tuesday morning aged 93 because of hemorrhage after undergoing stomach surgery. He will be buried in the Central Cemetery in Chisinau on the Armeneasca St, near poetess Leonida Lari. Glebus Sainciuc was best known for his vibrant papier-mache masks of famous Moldovan figures, including folk singer Nicolae Sulac, pop singer Anastasia Lazariuc, poets Grigore Vieru and Dumitru Matcovschi, comedian and author Gheorghe Urschi, composer and conductor Gheorghe Mustea and many others.
