Freshet on Prut River reached Ungheni district

The fifth freshet this year on Prut River reached Ungheni district, and is expected to reach Cahul district within 6 days.
The head of the Apele Moldovei” Company „ Mihai Pincov, announced that the freshet unleashed on Saturday in the Cernauti region with a debit of 600 cubic meters per second, continuing to increase. At the moment, the total volume of the freshet is of 350 million cubic meters. According to Pincov, after many consultations with the Romanian side it was decided to evacuate a certain quantity of water from the Costesti-Stanca accumulation lake of, so the freshet is not dangerous for the localities situated downstream, even if the water debit is cumulated by two tributary streams coming from the Romanian territory.
The authorities noted that the riverside localities will not be flooded, as the digs of Prut’s meadow can face a debit of 700 cubic meters per second, while the volume of this freshet does not outrun 600 cubic meters per second.
At the same time, the authorities of the Romanian Vaslui district are in alert, expecting, on Saturday, the freshet. The freshet might flood some thousand of hectares of those seven villages on the river Prut, near the district Vaslui. The whole zone of the Prut Valley of the district was evacuated.
Concomitantly, the dam will be patrolled permanently, and specialists of „Apele Romane” will supervise especially the Piscicultural Farm Carja, which had problems because of freshets in the past.
