The public transport in Chisinau that is now free generates daily losses of 1.7 – 2 billion lei, mayor general Ion Ceban stated in a news conference. These losses are covered by the municipality, IPN reports.
In connection with the measures taken to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, some of the public transport routes were reorganized and police employees at 80 public transport stations examine the units of transport to see how many passengers they convey.
The mayor said the public transport will be free for an indefinite period of time. If the two-week period imposed by the Commission for Exceptional Situations is extended, the base salaries of ticket conductors will be kept.
Ion Ceban noted that change will be made to the 2020 municipal budget given the unplanned costs incurred by the municipality.
The citizens of Chisinau can travel by 321 trolleybuses and 110 buses within the municipality. On workdays, all the units of transport run on routes, while on the weekend their number is decreased.
