The owners of buildings intended for public use in the Transnistrian region are obliged to install ramps to ensure free access and unhampered movement for persons with disabilities. An order to this effect was made by the region’s leader Vadim Krasnocelsky, IPN reports.
In the near future, the Transnistrians in wheelchairs will benefit from ramps that will be set up at the entrance to all the administrative buildings of the regional and municipal authorities, to exhibitions, concerts, libraries, drugstores and buildings that house medical institutions and social protection organizations and to hotels, hostels and hospices. The commercial, social and sports facilities, public eateries, lending institutions, recreational places, parks and beaches must also ensure wheelchair access. The alleys and footways will have special ways for wheelchair users.
The responsibility for absence of ramps will be borne by the local administration. The Transnistrian administration will monitor the process of ensuring the free movement of all the inhabitants and guests of the region.
During several years in a row, Transnistrian nongovernmental organizations have warned the authorities about the lack of conditions for the safe movement of persons with special needs. Civil society was ultimately heard and Transnistria joined the international movement to create a safe environment for persons with disabilities.
