The Ministry of Education and Research plans to fund free English language courses for university teachers. According to Minister Dan Perciun, the fact that the teachers don’t know English is one of the biggest obstacles to increasing the number of foreign students. “We don’t have a sufficient number of universities where teachers speak English proficiently and can teach in it. That’s why we will finance free courses for them,” the minister told a press conference, being quoted by IPN.
Dan Perciun noted that for higher education, internationalization is a priority. The Ministry this year aims to attract at least 1,000 foreign students, in addition to 5,000 who already study in the Republic of Moldova. In this connection, the English translation of several courses will be financed, such as: veterinary medicine, information technology, engineering, animation, game design.
“We should go to countries where there is a market. We will go to India, most likely. We will have a number of missions. We have already started discussions with our ambassador in India so that we can attract more foreign students from these markets. Where there will be a priority market, we will develop a unique country brand and a web page for foreign students, who would find all the information about the Republic of Moldova and the opportunities offered by studies in Moldova,” stated Dan Perciun.
Around €1.2 million is planned for these activities.
At the same time, two dormitories will be completely renovated. Around €2 million will be invested in each of them. These are dormitory No. 1 of the Moldova State University and dormitory No. 6 of “Ion Creangă” Teacher Training University. Future teachers mainly live at these dorms. “The ambition is to offer apartment-type accommodation, with sanitary facilitates integrated into the dwelling,” said the minister. The project is planned to start in 2025.
