Fourth National Carpet Fair to be held Dec. 17

The fourth National Carpet Fair “Covorul Dorului” (“Carpet of Longing”) will take place at the National Palace “Nicolae Sulac” in Chisinau between 11am and 4pm on December 17. According to the organizers, he men’s group caroling, which was put on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and unique carpets from two famous collections will be the attraction points this year, IPN reports.

The component “Tradition Carpet” includes an exhibition of the handicrafts center “Rustic Art” of Clisova Noua of Orhei district, which is led by Ecaterina Popescu, and an exhibition of carpets of the heritage of the Parents House of Palanca, Calarasi, belonging to Tatiana Popa, who promotes the button sewing technique.

The “Contemporaneity Carpet” includes an exhibition of carpets made by the companies Covoare Ungheni and Floare Carpet, of the series based on the chromatics and stylistics of the traditional carpet.

The “Friend Carpet” consists of carpets of public and private collections of representatives of ethnic groups of Moldova, such as Ukrainians, Bulgarians, Gagauz and Polish people.

“We launched the National Carpet Fair because we care a lot about the reinvigoration of national carpet weaving. The event appeared out of the love for the carpet, for the people who aim to revive it,” Minister of Education, Culture and Research Monica Babuc told a news conference.

The event will also include an artistic program. During the event, the visitors will be able to take part in different workshops, to purchase presents for family and relatives from the craftsmen’s bazaar of the Christmas Fair and to taste traditional dishes.

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Research allocated 232,000 lei for organizing and holding the National Carpet Fair.
