Cahul, Orhei, Soroca and Ungheni will have the status of municipality. A bill to this effect was passed by Parliament in the first reading, IPN reports.
One of the authors of the bill, Liberal-Democrat Tudor Deliu said they took into account the economic and demographic potential of these towns. This initiative fits perfectly the power decentralization process and offers greater powers and prerogatives to the local public authorities.
In the name of the Democratic faction, Deputy Speaker Sergiu Sarbu said that they propose offering the status of municipality to the towns Edinet and Hancesti. Liberal-Reformist MP Anatolie Arhire suggested including Straseni town in the same list. The proposals will be examined when the bill is debated in the second reading.
The leader of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu noted that the National Regional Development Strategy defines the notion of ‘economic growth poles’ and the status of municipality should be conferred based on this criterion.
In accordance with the law on the administrative-territorial organization of Moldova, the status of municipality was granted to the towns Chisinau, Balti, Bender, Comrat, and Tiraspol.
