Four prisoners held at Penitentiary No. 16 in Pruncu abandoned hunger strike after they received assistance from the League for the Defense of Human Rights of Moldova (LADOM), Info-Prim Neo reports. According to LADOM, the detainees went on hunger strike as they do no agree with the sentence passed by the court and want to be transferred to another penitentiary. These are the reasons that the prisoners invoke most often when they disobey the regime in prison, the LADOM experts say. In the case of the four detainees, experts of LADOM will hold discussions with officials of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions to solve the existing problems and ensure the respect for prisoners' rights. LADOM has monitored the problems faced by the detainees since February 2007, when the Legal Assistance Center for Detainees was founded as part of a program implemented with financial support from the Swedish organization Civil Rights Defenders.
