Two employees of the General Border Police Inspectorate and two drivers working on the Moldova-Italy route are investigated for frauds with COVID-19 certificates and false work contracts, IPN reports, quoting the National Anticorruption Center (NAC).
The four are suspected of asking for sums varying between €50 and €90 from Moldovans who wanted to go abroad for issuing them with false medical certificates showing a negative test for COVID-19 and with false work contracts so that they could cross Moldova’s state border, both in and out. A sum of €100 was asked for avoiding the mandatory 14-day self-isolation.
In the afternoon of July 22, officers of the NAC’s Local South Division and anticorruption prosecutors carried out searches at the border crossing points Giurgiulești-Galați and Leușeni-Albița and, as a result, arrested an employee of the General Border Police Inspectorate and two drivers working on the Moldova-Italy route.
Three of the four suspects were remained in custody for 72 hours and face up to ten years in jail for influence peddling and passive corruption. A border police officer is investigated outside custody.
