Four citizens of Moldova who formed part of a criminal group face jail terms for illegally taking mercury in very large amounts into Moldova. According to the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases, the four were charged and arrested for 30 days, IPN reports.
Prospectors established that the group consisted of two former employees of the Ministry of the Interior, an insurance company agent, an unemployed person and other individuals who are yet to be identified.
On July 10, a group of prosecutors of the North office, in concert with employees of the Security and Intelligence Service, arrested the group members immediately after these entered Moldova through the “Clocusna - Sokireany” customs post, which is situated in Clocusna, Ocnita. These had almost 1 kg of mercury hidden in the spare wheel section. At the black market, this quantity costs almost US$12,000.
The prosecution group carried out searches at the homes in Octnita and in the cars of group members, where they found and seized illegally kept guns and money that was allegedly obtained by illegal activities. The persons face three to ten years behind bars.
