The Bashkan (Governor) of Gagauzia Mihail Formuzal said the constitutional referendum failed because the population was poorly informed about it. In a news conference in Comrat on Friday, Formuzal said the voters in Gagauzia have not been adequately informed owing to the linguistic barriers, but a part of the blame is borne by Acting President Mihai Ghimpu, who is pursuing a unionist policy, Info-Prim Neo reports. Asked to comment on these accusations, Mihai Ghimpu said he repeatedly requested Mihail Formuzal to avoid speculations and respect the Moldovan legislation so as to prevent ethnic conflicts. “Formuzal’s statements do not promote the interests of Moldova, but his own interests as he wants to win the future elections. Persons like him have told lies during 20 years in our country. I said things and he knows what, if he considers himself Bashkan. Bashkan is a difficult Turkish word,” Mihai Ghimpu said. Mihail Formuzal said Friday that the Social Democratic Party and the Communists Party must be sued because they are also to blame for the failure of the plebiscite.
