The ex-director of the Security and Intelligence Service Vasile Botnari was arrested on unjust enrichment charges. The information was confirmed for IPN by the spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General’s Office Mariana Cherpec.

In the morning of March 29, officers of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office carried out searches at Vasile Botnari’s home. Information about the result of searches is to be provided in a press release later.

Vasile Botnari served as SIS director since May 2018 until June 2019. He was given a suspended sentence in the case of expulsion of the Turkish teachers, being fined 88,000 lei. It has been three years since the expulsion, but the case hasn’t been declassified yet even if the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe recommended the Moldovan authorities to do this.
