Former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase attempted suicide this morning, June 21, as the police came to arrest him at his residence. As the online version of the Romanian daily Adevarul reported, Adrian Nastase asked permission from the police officers to take some books from his office, using the opportunity to try to kill himself with a pistol. One of the officers managed to prevent the suicide, but not also the shot, which wounded Adrian Nastase to the neck. The condition of the former prime minister has been stabilized. On Tuesday evening, Adrian Nastase was sentenced to two years' imprisonment by the High Court of Cassation and Justice in the case of “Quality Trophy”, being accused of illegal collection of funds for his election campaign in 2004, when he ran for President on the Social-Democratic Party's nomination. Adrian Nastase was the Prime Minister of Romania during 2000-2004 under President Ion Iliescu’s administration.
