Ex-MP Sergiu Stati, will be tried for illicit enrichment. According to the investigations, between February 2014 and July 2019, the accused, serving as a parliamentarian and later as an ambassador-at-large, owned personally and through his close relative assets whose value substantially exceeded, by almost 2 million lei, the legally earned incomes, IPN reports.
According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, the criminal case was initiated in January 2022. The accused does not admit his guilt.
For illicit enrichment, the law stipulates punishment in the form of a fine in the amount of 400,000 to 500,000 lei or 7 to 15 years in jail, in both cases with ban on holding particular positions or carrying out a particular activity for a period of 10 to 15 years.
The Prosecutor’s Office said that in order to guarantee the execution of the sentence, the defendant’s immovable property and money, including real estate worth over 1.4 million lei, €44,800 and US$34,900 in cash, were seized.
