Ex-MP Iurie Bolboceanu, who was accused of treason in 2017, was acquitted by the Chisinau City Court after the prosecutors dropped the charges against him, IPN reports.

The Prosecutor General’s Office said this case forms part of the 38 political cases assessed by a group of prospectors that was created in February 2020. The decision was taken after the PACE issued a report with a list of cases that were allegedly started illegally, abusively, selectively and for political reasons against Moldovans.

Iurie Bolboceanu was sentenced to 14 years behind bars for treason in March 2018. According to the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases, Iurie Bolboceanu, being recruited by officers of the Main Information Division of the General Staff of the Russian Ministry of Defense, during October 5, 2016 and March 17, 2017, collected and transmitted information of national interest that could have been used to Moldova’s detriment.

The former MP was held for two years and three months, until the Chisinau City Appeals Court ordered a retrial. The charges against him were dropped.
