Former convict arrested for extorting money from woman

A 38-year-old man who extorted money from a woman from Balti faces seven years in jail. He threatened the victim with death, saying he will destroy her property and mutilate her daughter if she did not give him US$3,000, the Prosecutor General's Office says in a communique, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. The woman filed a complaint to the police and the man was caught in the act of taking the first tranche of US$500 of the money asked for. The man is from Chisinau. He turned out to be an acquaintance of the threatened woman's ex-husband. The victim told the police that her former husband, who is the father of her minor daughter, works abroad. The suspect was earlier tried for theft and robbery. He was recently released from prison after serving 11 years there.
