The Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor’s Office, together with the Police, continues to fight crimes against property. As a result, a conviction has been obtained in the "relative involved in an accident" fraud scheme. The court ordered the perpetrator's deportation to Hungary after serving his sentence, IPN reports.

According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, the accused, along with other unidentified individuals, orchestrated the scam. They contacted victims by phone, falsely informing them that a relative had been involved in a car accident.

In September 2024, they called a man from the Ciocana sector of the capital, claiming that his daughter had been in an accident and was allegedly at fault. Under the pretext of covering her medical expenses, they demanded an immediate cash transfer.

Deceived by the scheme, the victim handed over 44,000 lei and 6,550 euros, which were later retrieved by the perpetrator from a hidden location as arranged with other group members.

According to the sentence issued by the Chisinau Court, Buiucani branch, the 32-year-old defendant was sentenced to two years in prison and will be deported to Hungary upon completing the sentence. The young man pleaded not guilty, claiming he was unaware of the contents of the envelope he had collected.

The cash handover was carried out through an undercover investigator, ensuring that the victim’s financial losses were fully recovered.
