The Republic of Moldova is actively involved in promoting social, economic and sustainable development and intends to perseveringly contribute to the activity of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), so as it becomes an efficient tool of coordinating the implementation of the development agenda envisaged in the Millennium Declaration. The statement was made on July 1 by the Moldovan Foreign Minister, Andrei Stratan, at the annual ECOSOC meeting in New York, Info-Prim Neo has learnt from the press unit of the Ministry of External Affairs and European Integration.
In his opinion, reaching an optimal balance among the economic development, the development and the preservation of environment is one of the main challenges on the way of sustainable development. He has remarked the food production and, respectively, the prices have been affected by the climate change, as the current food crisis has become a common concern. As far as Moldova is concerned, the last summer drought and the market fluctuations have triggered the farmers' incomes to fall.
Andrei Stratan has also pointed out the significance of developing regional cooperation projects, as Moldova is to host the regional conference “Strengthening National and Regional Partnerships” dedicated to preventing and counteracting natural calamities on 9-10 October 2008.
Referring to the level of realizing the Millennium Development Objectives in Moldova, the Minister has underlined that all those 8 objectives are closely interrelated, as the development strategies rarely focus on one objective only.
Andrei Stratan has underlined that ECOSOC is to further play a key role in promoting better coordination among the UN agencies as to implement the results of the UN conferences and summits, in realizing the objectives of the Millennium Summit and in advancing the dialog among countries.
