Flu claims three more lives in Moldova

The A(H1N1) flu makes new victims. Three persons, one of whom a child, died from complications associated with flu in Moldova last week. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection said the persons who died weren’t vaccinated against seasonal flu. The number of lives claimed by flu the current epidemical season rose to nine.

Contacted by IPN, press officer of the Ministry Cristina Stratulat said the child was aged eight months and was from Hâncești district. This was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia on hospitalization.

A number of 270 cases of seasonal flu were recorded during January 21-27, 2019. Of these, 62 were confirmed by lab tests. According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, the flu epidemiological situation is medium intense. Over 16,000 cases of acute upper respiratory tract infections and 680 cases of severe respiratory infections were reported in Moldova last week. The morbidity for acute upper respiratory tract infections was 454.36 cases per 100,000 people, higher than the epidemic ceiling of 315.88 per 100,000 people.

During October 1, 2018 – January 27, 2019, there were recorded 541 cases of flu, almost 141,000 cases of acute upper respiratory tract infections and over 7,000 cases of severe respiratory infections.

Specialists warn the population to immediately see a doctor when symptoms of disease appear. The patients should be isolated at home and hospitalized, if necessary. Those who are exposed to the risk of infection, pregnant women, immunocompromised persons, those with cardiovascular and chronic respiratory system diseases and diabetes and those who are obese should avoid contact with sick persons.
