Senior state officials in the morning of May 9 laid flowers at the Memorial Complex “Eternity” on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. President Igor Dodon, Parliament Speaker Zinaida Grechanyi and Prime Minister Ion Chicu congratulated the citizens on the occasion of the Victory Day, IPN reports.

According to President Dodon, today it is the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory in World War II. That war involved over 400,000 Moldovans and about 100,000 of them died. “Let’s remember and not forget the heroic deeds of our parents and grandparents. I want to wish good health to the veterans who are still near us and who, by their bravery and verticality, daily give us as the example that we should be proud successors of those who ensured peace on our land,” stated the official.

President Dodon said he will today go to hand over the Order of the Republic to a veteran and will also travel to Șerpeni where he will take part in the ceremony to bury the bones of 45 unknown soldiers.

Speaker Zinaida Grechanyi congratulated the citizens on this holiday. She noted that we should never forget those to whom we owe our peace and this clear sky, including the current day. We should not forget about the veterans who are alive and should take care of them. This memory should be transmitted to the future generation,” she stated.

Prime Minister Ion Chicu said that the bloodiest war in the history of mankind ended in Europe 75 years ago. That war took more than 50 million lives. “These people sacrificed their lives for peace. We should never forget the price paid for this peace,” he noted.

May 9 is celebrated as an event of peace and unity all over the European continent. This year, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, all the events devoted to May 9 were postponed to August 24.
