Senior state officials, the diplomatic corps working in Moldova and hundreds of people laid flowers at the Memorial Complex “Eternity” in the morning of May 9, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the victory over fascism in World War II. Moldova’s President Nicolae Timofti said that 70 years ago mankind was witness to the end of the most serious tragedy in its history and May 9 is the day when we speak about peace and the capacity to defeat the aggressive behaviors, IPN reports.

Nicolae Timofti expressed his gratitude to the veterans who fought in the war for their sacrifice, saying that by stopping the military operations in Europe and other regions covered by World War II, things were returned to normality, to peace and welfare. With millions of victims caused, the war showed that the clashes between the peoples is not a solution and this day is an occasion for remembering the principles of the Paris Charter by which all the states pledged to refrain from violence against the sovereignty of other countries.

The head of state called on the veterans to transmit to the young generations the hatred towards war and the love for peace.

Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici said May 9 will always remember the tragedy of the whole mankind and the dangers posed by extremism. “The arms continue to be used today, even at this moment, and it’s a pity because history taught us many lessons, one of which is that mankind must ensure peace and give birth to hope,” he stated, wishing the veterans health and promising, as a Prime Minister, to ensure peace and stability. He also made a call for tolerance and thanked those who fought in the name of Moldova’s European future and prosperity.

Holiday meals for veterans will be staged all over the country during the day. The veterans will also receive 10,000 lei in assistance from the state.

The document on the capitulation of the German forces to the Allies was signed in France on May 7, 1945. The next day, a similar document was signed in Berlin, the Germans capitulating explicitly to the Soviet forces. Owing to the difference in time, the document being signed shortly after midnight, the West celebrates Victory Day on May 8, while the former Soviet States on May 9.

For Europe, the war ended, while in Asia it continued until Japan capitulated, the capitulation acts being signed on September 2, 1945.
